# Grain Markets

Western Canadian grain markets were generally steady to slightly softer this week as traders reacted to improving prairie weather and continued uncertainty in export demand.

## Durum Wheat

Durum prices remain relatively firm compared to other cereals. Buyers continue to look for quality supplies, although movement has slowed somewhat compared to winter levels. Producers holding good-quality durum from the 2025 crop are still in a reasonably strong marketing position.

Many farmers in the Special Areas continue to favor durum because of:

  • Lower moisture requirements compared to some crops
  • Strong fit for brown and dark brown soils
  • Familiar agronomy and equipment requirements
  • Lower disease pressure in drier regions
  • However, concerns remain over:
  • Rising fertilizer costs
  • Rail transportation reliability
  • Volatility in export demand from North Africa and Italy

## Canola

Canola markets softened slightly during the week after a strong spring rally earlier in the year. Traders are watching:

  • Chinese demand
  • Biofuel policy developments
  • Prairie seeding progress
  • Moisture forecasts

Many producers are trimming canola acreage slightly this season due to:

  • High input costs
  • Increased flea beetle concerns
  • Greater financial risk in dry years

Current Grain Market Conditions

Canola remains the strongest major crop in western Canada. Alberta cash bids continue to hold in the mid-$15 per bushel range in many areas, supported by strong domestic crush demand and steady export movement.

Durum markets remain softer. Large world supplies and improving European moisture conditions have reduced some upward pressure on wheat prices. Recent rains in Europe have stabilized crop expectations after earlier drought concerns.

Feed barley markets are generally steady but under pressure from adequate supplies and cheaper imported feed grain alternatives.

What Producers Are Watching

  • Late May rainfall
  • U.S. drought conditions
  • European wheat recovery
  • Export demand from Asia
  • Fertilizer and fuel cost pressure

Marketing Observations

Many experienced producers continue to market incrementally rather than aggressively forward pricing the entire crop. With weather uncertainty still very high, maintaining flexibility remains important.
